Couple more things...

In my rush this morning I forgot to mention the main prayer points from my mum:
  • Dad going to see liver specialist on Friday, 5 February 2010. Although blood tests came back clear, there was a minor concern that he might have hepatitis B so they're going to be getting those tests done.
  • Doctors have said that usually the third week of treatment is the worst as it can be the time where all the side-effects start to show themselves. Please pray with us that my dad won't have all these extra problems.
  • Continue to pray for both my parents that they will be able to get sufficient rest. My dad's headaches are currently making this really difficult and for my mum, also pray for her strength as she continues to look after my dad.
I think that covered everything discussed earlier this morning. I've got heaps more work to do before the last day of school tomorrow so please excuse me if I end here abruptly. :)

6am Quickie

From the sudden influx of messages asking about the well-being of my dad, mum and myself, I gather it must be time for another update. I'm really sorry if I have not managed to reply your message personally but I will try to get around to them. It's now 6am and I should be getting ready to leave so please forgive me if this turns out to be a short update (unusual for me I know) but if I don't manage to put everything up here now, I'll write another one sooner.

I talked to my mum this morning so as to make sure you have the latest. A previous phone call about 2 days ago saw us all giving thanks to the Lord that the bone marrow test came back clear (i.e. the cancer had not spread there). The blood tests had also come back to show that my dad's blood count did increase although only very slightly. When I talked to him myself a couple of days ago, he had mentioned that he was breathing a little better as the tumour feels like it was reduced. The only thing right now, as I have just heard, is that he gets terrible headaches which prevents him from sleeping. The painkillers and what-not have stopped taking effect and it just makes things really difficult. My mum also mentioned that they were told the 3rd week of treatment is usually pretty bad because if any side-effects are present, they usually show up then. Next week will be the 3rd week of the radiotherapy so please pray with us that there will not be any problems arising from this.

My dad was trying to catch up with some sleep when I called but my mum mentioned that they were really hoping to be able to attend the prayer meeting on the Doulos before it heads out for yet another dry dock. In general, while they are both tired, they still look very much forward to fellowship and I know they are both still keen to go to the International Leader's Meeting just after the last radiotherapy treatment in March, I believe. We're still praying towards a decent recovery by then.

As for me, I'm just about to hop onto 2 buses to teach my last class in this school. It's one of those bitter-sweet moments though if any of you think that this means I have less work, please think again. I've got an 8,000 word essay due on Wednesday and have so far written about 3,000 words of fluff. I still have to be in school tomorrow so it's mostly down to a Monday and Tuesday effort. (I'm going to be recooperating from the week on Saturday and resting as I should on Sunday). Whatever the case and although I know I'm going to be exhausted, I'm also looking forward to being at George and Drena's golden wedding anniversary celebration tomorrow... I've missed some good OM fellowship I think. :)

Anyway, I've got exactly 5 minutes now to get my shoes on, grab a coat and head out the door so I'll say thank you yet again for all your love, concern, support and prayer.

Sustained by His Grace

So I just got off the phone with my mum not too long ago and managed to get a few words with my dad as well. I figured from the ever so slightly increasing amount of emails and facebook messages, that people are itching for an update.

The latest that I've heard is that my dad has had his chemotherapy postponed due to the discovery of his low blood count on Friday. My parents went to visit the haematologist (i.e. blood doctor) today, which is Monday, to discuss what needs to be done. For some reason, my dad's body hasn't been absorbing the nutrients though he has been eating a TON of supplements and is often dehydrated though he does drink a lot. For these reasons, my dad will be going for more tests tomorrow, one of them being a bone marrow test.

Please do continue to pray for both my parents. Please pray for strength as my dad goes for all these tests and for the radio therapy. Though he will be stuck at home the majority of the time, we pray that it will continue to be a fruitful time. Pray also for my mum as she follows my dad to his treatments and juices any fruit or vegetable in sight (praise God for friends who lent them an apparently AMAZING juicer). Also, we are continuing to pray for my grandparents, in particular my grandfather on my dad's side as he goes for dialysis four times a week. Pray for my grandmother as she accompanies him for these 4 hour sessions too.

As for me, I'm in my last 2 weeks of this first school placement. God has been gracious and ever faithful (no surprise there) in numerous ways. It continues to be a moment by moment, day by day dependence on the grace of God and I'm thankful to the Lord for provisions made through friendship, through prayer and through his word. Please do continue to pray for me too as I start my second placement in my old high school in mid-late February. I will resist telling you my thoughts of how these next few weeks are going to be... let's just say I'm REALLY REALLY grateful for all your prayers. :)

*deep breath* Well, I am sorry if this update took a little while in coming but I hope it will suffice for now.

Take Me Home!

All the following events are recorded in Singapore time:
Thursday, 7 January 2010
2100 hours- Wave goodbye to Doulos possibly for the last time and heads to Singapore airport
Friday, 8 January 2010
0000 hours- Sitting comfortably with Shirley Booth in foot massage machines at Singapore airport.
0110 hours- Sitting on Singapore aeroplane headed for Zurich next to an Australian teacher who now teaches in an International school in Switzerland. Plane delayed apparently because air traffic is quite bad at that time of the "day". Managed to sleep for 3 or so hours and watched a few weird movies such as 'This is it' and '9' and 'Love Happens'.
1430 hours- Plane lands in Zurich airport (0730 local time) which has a light dusting of snow. Debbie is happy just to be on the ground and in a cooler climate.
1500 hours- Grabbed small 15kg luggage, went through customs and found out EasyJet flight to Gatwick airport is cancelled due to "terrible" weather conditions.
1630 hours- After several most likely very expensive phone calls and text messages, Uncle Clarence books flight for me to fly to London City Airport on British Airways at 16:55 local time.
1800 hours- Debbie changes Singapore dollars to buy a cup of coffee and a Danish pastry. Debbie also realises that laptop battery hasn't died yet and loves the fact that she can use offline gmail though should probably start roaming airport again before she falls asleep and misses new flight.
2300 hours- Sitting at gate waiting to board plane headed for London City Airport
2337 hours- Pilot announces at the gate that there are serious technical faults on the aircraft and more information will be released as they try to fix the problem.
Saturday, 9 January 2010
0100 hours- Some sort of announcement is made and everyone goes to a different gate only to find information was wrong. We all return to original gate.
0130 hours- Flight is not officially cancelled but people at gate tell us it is. Told to wait for further information
0145 hours- We move to new gate and they collect in tickets.
0200 hours- I get a new ticket for a different flight scheduled to leave at 1915 local time bound for London Heathrow. Current status: desperate desire for a hot shower and a warm bed. Realised that I have now held 3 different tickets for flights heading to 3 different airports within London and yet have not been out of this airport for almost 12 hours. Add on the delayed 13 hour flight due to bad weather and the journey from the ship, I've been "on the road" for 28 hours now. You may be able to tell that Debbie is ever so slightly grumpy at this point of time.
0300 hours- Everybody finally boards the plane
0335 hours- Problems with snow on the runway but we finally take off. Debbie is ecstatic but much too tired to express such emotion. :P
0500 hours- Touch down in LHR terminal 5, YAY! Oh wait, there is serious ice on the runways so outbound flights are stuck therefore there is no free parking space for us. They tell us it could be a 45min to 1 hour wait. Lots of swear words are being flung about... kinda funny.
0545 hours- Debbie is out of the plane and praising God for IRIS so she doesn't have to stand in the ridiculously long passport control queue.
0615 hours- Luggage finally comes through.
0630 hours- Catch free train to Heathrow Central. That's nice.
0700 hours- Catch X26 bus that takes me to East Croydon... hope I don't fall into too deep a sleep and miss my stop.
0820 hours- Managed to wake up in time to get off X26 and wait in the cold for about 5 minutes before 119 comes along to take me home.
0845 hours- Debbie finally opens the door to the flat to find a pile of mail on the floor.

Summary Statistics
0900- The local time in Singapore when I waved the Doulos goodbye possibly for the last time on Thursday the 7th of January 2010.
4- The number of plane tickets with different destinations I held in my hands though I only sat on 2 planes and stayed in exactly one terminal of the airport for 3 of them.
12- The number of hours I hung around Zurich airport... still not sure how I survived that one as I definitely did not sleep.
3- Total amount of hours slept out of the last 36.
0100- The current hour now in London on Saturday the 9th of January 2010.
36- The total number of hours spent to get from point A to point B.

Status: hungry, sleep, a little bit cold but all in all, extremely grateful to the Lord for friends who helped get the tickets, for the fact that I DID actually managed to fly and that He brought me safely back... also for things like a warm bed, super-comfy duvets and my much-missed pillow. Indeed, GOD IS STILL GOOD! Goodnight dearest praying friends.
